Autism Awareness - A Student Centered Approach
Zane North welcomes students of all abilities! Taking a proactive and intentional approach Zane students are taught how to offer assistance to children with special abilities in ways that are helpful and comforting. This week Zane North Special Education teachers, Mrs Curley and Mrs. D'Achillo visited each classroom and highlighted how students with autism enrich the Zane community. Through a read aloud and powerpoint presentation students learned important facts about autism. Mrs. Curley, Gr K-2 Special Education teacher read, “My Sister Lulu and Me” to the Pre-K, Kindergarten, first and second grade classes. This story is written from a young girl's perspective and talks about how the sisters are different from each other but yet, in ways, the same. Mrs D’Achillo, Gr 3-5 Special Education teacher, shared an informational powerpoint to upper elementary students, highlighting autism challenges and triumphs. In an age appropriate fashion students learned that a diagnosis of autism does not limit the potential of greatness within each student. By expanding our student understanding of autism a culture of compassion is fostered supporting an inclusive community where all Zane students!
